How New EEG Research Can Help Kids with Autism

January 7, 2025 by Anne Hill

Girl getting an EEG for Autism treatment

For parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), finding treatments that truly help can be difficult. But new brain research is giving families fresh hope. Dr. Spencer Miller, our medical director, co-authored a new study that found a unique brainwave pattern in children with autism. This groundbreaking study connects this brainwave pattern to variations in the MTHFR gene, a key player in brain development and function. This discovery advances our understanding of autism and opens the door to more personalized and effective treatments. EEG Research and Autism: What it Can Mean for Your Child An EEG (electroencephalogram) is a simple, noninvasive tool that measures brain activity. Is Parkinson’s Disease More Prevalent than We Thought? A New Study Says Yes.

March 16, 2023 by Dr Spencer Miller

Parkinson's Disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's. And a new study, published in December 2022 and backed by the Parkinson's Foundation, found that the incidence of the disease in the United States was 50% greater than previously estimated.  The study was the most comprehensive ever done in North America. Takeaways include: The prior estimate of Parkinson's incidence was 40,000 to 60,000 per year. The new research shows that the number of diagnoses per year is almost 1.5 times higher, at approximately 90,000. Estimates of Parkinson's disease incidence increase with those aged 65 and older. Incidence estimates are higher in males than females, no matter the age. Rates of Parkinson's disease are higher in certain geographic regions: the … [Read more...] about Is Parkinson’s Disease More Prevalent than We Thought? A New Study Says Yes.

MeRT for Chronic Insomnia

February 27, 2023 by Dr Spencer Miller

When you suffer from insomnia, your mental and physical health are both impacted. Everybody struggles with a lack of adequate sleep from time to time. This is normal, and your body should recover in a short period once you catch up on your sleep. Sleep is one of the pillars of good health. It’s a basic need, just like breathing, eating, and drinking. Sleep helps your brain to work properly. It helps you to pay attention, learn, and make good decisions. It also indicates the kind of mood you will be in and your ability to cope with stress. Chronic insomnia is different and can have long-term adverse effects on both your mental and physical health. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), 70 million people in the U.S. suffer from this condition. Additionally, a survey by the … [Read more...] about MeRT for Chronic Insomnia

A Proven, Drug-Free Alternative to Antidepressants

February 24, 2022 by Dr Spencer Miller

Antidepressants are everywhere these days, and it’s no wonder: Depression among adults in the United States tripled in the early months of the COVID pandemic. And new research shows that this only increased in 2021, with depression affecting one in every three American adults. However, when it comes to treating depression, what works for one person may not work for another. And while the right antidepressant can be a lifesaver for many people, it’s also important to understand that medication is not the complete answer when treating depression or anxiety. In fact, many people find that antidepressants aren’t working as they’d hoped, despite trying multiple different medications. Moreover, the more combinations of these drugs some people try, the less likely they will respond positively. … [Read more...] about A Proven, Drug-Free Alternative to Antidepressants
