COVID-19 After Care

We are a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, and while we still are learning about its after-effects, we are discovering that some of these symptoms that linger can be treated. If you’ve had a mild case of the virus, chances are that you will recover fairly quickly and not have lasting effects. However, if you’ve had a moderate to severe case of this virus, and/or you’ve been hospitalized, it’s likely that you are experiencing some after-effects that can be quite debilitating, which, unfortunately, can last for quite some time such as:

  • Depression
  • PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder)
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Brain Fog
  • Other cognitive problems
  • Short term memory issues

Recovery time can also be extended with people who have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma, or a compromised immune system.

MeRT for COVID-19 After Effects

At the Brain Treatment Center in Dallas, Spencer Miller, M.D. uses a technology called MeRT, which stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy to treat the conditions listed above. In general, patients receiving MeRT treatment report improvement in each of these symptoms after COVID infection. Additionally, COVID has been shown to be a cause of inflammation in brain tissue. This inflammation can also be reduced after going through MeRT treatment.

While MeRT isn’t a cure for damage that may have been caused to the brain from COVID-19, it can help alleviate some of the pervasive symptoms originating from the brain that linger as patients are healing or have healed from this virus.

COVID has been shown to be a cause of inflammation in brain tissue. This inflammation can also be reduced after treatment as well.

Please note that we are unable to see patients who are still positive for the virus, though we are happy to see you once you have recovered from the acute phase of COVID-19, and are testing negative.

Every Person is Affected Differently by the Virus

Every person’s brain is as unique as their fingerprint. That’s what makes our approach so revolutionary. The MeRT protocols utilize brainwave analysis to isolate specific areas of the brain that are not functioning or communicating the way they should. We then use this data to develop a targeted, personalized approach aimed at bringing about healthy brain communication. This individualized treatment, utilizing specialized equipment, gently stimulates distinct areas of the brain that may lead to improved function.

What is MeRT?

DepressionMeRT stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy.

MeRT is an emerging technology that is non-surgical, non-invasive, and non-pharmacological that, in the simplest of terms, is used to reprogram abnormal electrical signals in the patient’s brain to ultimately modify behavior.

In more technical terms, MeRT uses a very individualized approach by obtaining a qEEG, which is a diagnostic study that measures the pattern of electrical signals in the patient’s brain. This study not only tells us what is not functioning properly in the brain but also helps us determine how the brain should be operating. Using this information, we then create a precision treatment protocol using a set of magnets placed on the patient’s scalp to send electrical signals back into the brain in a manner that causes re-organization of the signals, thereby stimulating and organizing the function of neurons in the brain. This process is called Neuromodulation.

Starting as a New Patient

When you start as a new patient at the Brain Treatment Center Dallas, you will initially need two appointments, approximately two days apart. Both appointments will be about an hour in length. These appointments will be used to determine if Dr. Miller feels you can truly benefit from the MeRTSM [Magnetic e-Resonance Treatment] Program and, if so, to develop a tailored treatment plan based on your test results. Once you have done the testing and Consultation, you are not obliged to begin treatment. This is something that you will determine once you have seen your test results and consulted with Dr. Miller.

At the first appointment, we will go over your reasons for seeking help, your medical history, your health goals, and all of your symptoms. You will then begin initial testing, which will involve an EEG and an EKG. These are both completely painless and easy and are done right in our office. Your information and test results are then sent over to our scientific and clinical teams, who will carefully analyze the results and determine the current state and functioning of the brain together with Dr. Miller.

We use a patented, scientific approach with the neurophysiological data gathered through testing to then develop a highly customized treatment plan that is aimed at encouraging healthy brain communication and function.

At your second appointment, you will meet with Dr. Miller for a Consultation. He will discuss your test results and whether or not he and our scientific team feel that results may be achieved for you through our treatment protocol. This appointment will also serve to answer any additional questions you may have. After that second appointment, Dr. Miller will lay out your individualized treatment plan and the protocols to be followed for the best results. At that point, you may discuss fees, length of treatment, and schedules, and then decide whether to go forward and schedule your treatment.

Insurance Coverage

Unfortunately, we do not accept insurance, nor file it on your behalf. However, we can provide you with CPT codes and a billing breakdown that you may submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement for conditions that have been FDA-cleared such as Major Depressive Disorder and OCD. On occasion, individuals have been successful in receiving reimbursement for EEGs and clinical evaluations, and possibly other elements for treatment, depending on the individual’s coverage. It has been our experience that Medicare does not reimburse any of the treatment costs.

For conditions other than Major Depressive Disorder and OCD, because treatment is considered “off-label,” insurance rarely reimburses any of the costs associated with treatment.
