MeRT® for Anxiety Symptoms
MeRT® (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) is a personalized, non-invasive neuromodulation approach that may help reduce anxiety symptoms by improving how specific brain networks function.
According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly one in three Americans will experience an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives. For some, anxiety is situational and temporary. For others, it becomes chronic, affecting sleep, focus, relationships, and daily functioning.
While therapy, medication, and lifestyle strategies can be helpful, they don’t work for everyone. When anxiety persists despite these approaches, a brain-based treatment may be worth exploring.
At Brain Treatment Center Dallas, we use EEG-guided rTMS (MeRT) to tailor treatment to each patient’s brain activity, with the goal of supporting healthier regulation of the neural patterns associated with anxiety.
Why Anxiety Can Persist and How MeRT Addresses It
Chronic anxiety is often linked to dysregulated brain activity—patterns that keep the nervous system stuck in a heightened state of alert, even when no immediate threat is present.
At Brain Treatment Center Dallas, MeRT is used to help identify and address these patterns through detailed brain mapping. Using a quantitative EEG (qEEG), we analyze how different regions of the brain are communicating and whether certain areas are overactive, underactive, or out of sync.
Treatment is then guided by this data using EEG-guided rTMS. Unlike standardized approaches that apply stimulation in the same way for every patient, MeRT allows protocols to be adjusted based on each person’s brain activity, with the goal of supporting more balanced regulation.
The TMS technology used in the MeRT process is FDA-cleared for Major Depressive Disorder and OCD. In clinical practice, it may also be used off-label to support individuals with anxiety when symptoms persist despite therapy, medication, or lifestyle interventions.
“We’re really seeking to balance the function of the brain.”
“When you optimize the brain, the brain is seeking equilibrium, homeostasis, or a low energy state in which to operate. An aberrancy or dysfunction of the brain actually requires energy for the brain to kind of realign itself…. And when you’re using that extra energy it fatigues the brain. It makes the brain not operate optimally. It makes you confused and tired, and lack understanding. This is very similar to nutrition: If you don’t have the right nutrition the balance just isn’t there. We’re really seeking to balance the function of the brain.”
–Dr. Spencer O. Miller, Neurologist, Owner and Medical Director of Brain Treatment Center Dallas
What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?
The American Psychological Association (APA) defines anxiety as “an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure.”
With generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), these thoughts and feelings don’t go away. People with GAD experience intense anxiety, worry, or nervousness about everyday life. This can create significant problems in daily social interactions, at school, and at work.
GAD affects 6.8 million adults, or 3.1% of the U.S. population, in any given year.

Patient Stories
“I received MeRT treatment from Dr. Miller back in 2021. It was life-changing! I have struggled with CPTSD for many years. After treatment, I was able to get off my medication and have been thriving. Highly recommend anyone struggling with PTSD, depression, and/or anxiety to look into this treatment. It is worth the time and money to get back to your old self. Dr Miller truly saved my life by treating me and I can’t thank him enough!”

– Kasey Cooper
“I’ve made significant progress in cognitive ability, stress tolerance, and mental clarity. I have been able to handle decisions much better and think clearer. Plus, I have been able to significantly decrease conflict with my family and actually lead much better.”

Verified Patient
“I was not in a good way. The slightest stressor would cause me to spiral into a brain fog that affected my vision, my speech, and my mood. I couldn’t read and understand words on paper for more than a paragraph. I couldn’t articulate myself properly a lot of the time. Irritability came quickly, followed by frustration and anger about my situation.
“I accepted all of this as my new normal. Encouraged by my husband to seek a second opinion from a new neurologist, I was pointed toward Dr. Miller at the Brain Treatment Center in Dallas, where I underwent six weeks of treatment.
“I can say with absolute certainty that it has changed my life for the better. I no longer have brain spirals at the slightest hint of stress, and I can think and speak clearly through different situations.
“If you or someone you know is struggling with any of the issues that I struggled with, I encourage you to seek help at the Brain Treatment Center. I wish I had found it sooner.”
“Of all my injuries, by far the worst were the ones you could not see. I had degraded to the point of not being able to leave my home because of panic attacks and severe anxiety. I could not hide from this feeling, and no medication could numb it.
“I underwent neural restorative therapy [MeRT] for two months with total symptom resolution. Now I can function again at work and spend much-needed time with my family. I have my sense of well-being back and a clarity of thought I haven’t had in many years.”
