MeRT for Autism Treatment
FAQs

Answers to Your Most Common Questions about MeRT for Autism

If you’re a parent or caregiver researching treatment options for your child with autism, we understand how overwhelming it can be. MeRT® is a unique, noninvasive therapy that’s helped many children improve communication, behavior, and overall quality of life. Below, we’ve answered the most common questions we receive about MeRT treatment for autism.

If you don’t see your question here, please don’t hesitate to reach out — we’re here to help.

Understanding MeRT for Autism

What is MeRT treatment?

MeRT stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy. This emerging technology uses a combination of EEG brain mapping and gentle magnetic stimulation to help balance and improve brain activity. We customize each treatment plan based on your child’s brain patterns.

How is MeRT different from regular TMS or neurofeedback?

Unlike standard TMS, which uses a “one-size-fits-all” approach, MeRT is tailored to each person’s brain activity. We use EEG and EKG testing to create a personalized treatment protocol. Neurofeedback also aims to regulate brainwaves, but MeRT uses magnetic stimulation rather than visual or auditory feedback.

Is MeRT safe for children with autism?

Yes. MeRT is a noninvasive, drug-free therapy that has been shown to be safe for children and teens with autism. The stimulation is gentle and well-tolerated.

What ages can receive MeRT treatment?

MeRT therapy can be appropriate for children, teens, and adults with autism. Many parents explore this treatment for young children, especially when other therapies haven’t produced the desired results.

The best way to know if your child is a good candidate is through an initial consultation and EEG evaluation. Every child is unique, and our team carefully considers developmental stage, medical history, and brainwave patterns before recommending treatment.

Autism Treatment Process

What happens during the initial evaluation?

We start with a detailed qEEG and EKG to measure brain activity and heart rhythm. From there, our team creates a customized treatment plan based on your child’s unique brain patterns.

How long does the treatment take?

Most MeRT treatment programs last 4 to 6 weeks, with sessions held five days a week. Each session takes about 30–45 minutes.

What does a MeRT session feel like?

The stimulation feels like a gentle tapping sensation on the scalp. It’s not painful, and most children tolerate it very well.

Can I stay with my child during sessions?

Yes, parents are welcome to stay in the room during treatment. We want your child to feel safe and supported.

Do we have to stop other therapies while doing MeRT?

No. MeRT can be done alongside other therapies like ABA, speech therapy, or occupational therapy. In fact, many families find that MeRT enhances the benefits of their existing treatments.

What to Expect

When will we start seeing changes?

Every child is different, but many families notice improvements within the first few weeks of treatment. Common early changes include better sleep, calmer behavior, improved focus, and more eye contact.

What kinds of improvements are possible?

Parents often report better communication, more social engagement, improved emotional regulation, and increased awareness of their surroundings. Some children become more verbal; others show more consistent behavior and routines.

Are the effects permanent?

MeRT encourages long-term changes in brain activity. Some children benefit from occasional maintenance sessions, especially during growth or developmental changes.

What if we need to stop treatment early?

We understand that every family has different needs. If you need to pause or stop treatment, we’ll guide you on the best path forward based on your child’s progress.

Cost & Insurance

Does insurance cover MeRT for autism?

Unfortunately, we do not accept insurance nor file it on your behalf. However, we can provide CPT codes and a billing breakdown you may submit to your insurance.

For conditions other than Major Depressive Disorder and OCD (which are FDA-cleared), insurance rarely reimburses any of the costs associated with treatment.

What is the cost if insurance doesn’t cover it?

Costs can vary depending on your child’s needs and the length of treatment. We offer a detailed breakdown after the initial evaluation.

Do you offer payment plans?

We do not, but we’ll work with you to make treatment as accessible as possible.

All treatment is overseen by Dr. Spencer Miller, a neurologist with many years of experience working with MeRT and a Trusted Autism Doctor.

Who is Dr. Spencer Miller?

Dr. Spencer O. Miller, a Neurologist in Dallas, Texas, is the owner and Medical Director of Brain Treatment Center Dallas. He has worked extensively with patients with ASD.

“Autism has a very specific EEG pattern that we’ve recognized in the past several years. A lot of learning difficulties stem from broken frontal lobes or broken language centers in the temporal lobes. And when we recognize that and correlate it with an EEG, we can then formulate a very specific plan for treatment of that patient. We have seen some very impressive results in the treatment of Autism with MeRT.”  – Dr. Miller

How do I get started?

It all begins with a free phone consultation. From there, we’ll schedule your child’s EEG testing and begin building a personalized treatment plan.
